What you once forswore, you may someday just go ahead and do again.

Just when he thought he was out, they pulled him back in. Ray Stevens had spent his early career in the shady underworld of novelty songs, but by the early seventies he'd gone completely legit. "No more songs like Ahab The Arab," he must have told himself, "from now on it's only the sweetly sincere Ray Stevens of Communicate With Me, America and Everything Is Beautiful." But then a minor college fad for running naked through public places caught your Birthstar's attention, and he couldn't resist taking a shot at that last big score. The Streak went all the way to #1, thanks in part to a nationally televised streaking incident on Oscar night in 1974, and soon Ray had slipped back into his old ways. Driven by his pathological need to be silly and supported by the Muzak royalties from Everything Is Beautiful, he has directed his energies since 1974 into songs like I Need Your Help, Barry Manilow, and Osama, Yo Mama, reaffirming his rightful place in the constellation Novelty Merchant and bestowing on those born under his mismatched #1 hits a definite ability to keep a straight face, but greater success when they allow themselves (and others) to smile.
