Some principles are worth defending, but how will you know which ones?

Put yourself in the shoes of Zal Yanovsky, a resident alien in the United States and the guitarist for the fun-lovin' Lovin' Spoonful. It's 1967, and your band is at the peak of its success, but the San Francisco Police have you by the long hairs. They've got you cold for marijuana possession, and you've been presented with a Hobson's choice: identify your source, or face deportation. What would you have done in the face of this dilemma? Would you have betrayed the principles of the drug-loving sixties counterculture whose embrace had been such a big part of your band's success, or would you have risked a return to the brutally repressive nation of...Canada? Apparently for Zal, exile in Ontario sounded worse than career suicide, so he named names and left San Francisco a free man. And sure enough, your Birthstar was subsequently boycotted out of existence by their high-and-mighty fan base. The other primary force in the Spoonful, John Sebastian, would go on to future popstrological success in his solo career, while poor Zal, in what some might call an ironic fulfillment of his moral-ethical destiny, ended up back in Canada anyway. You can go home again, popstrological children of the Lovin' Spoonful, but perhaps not at a time of your choosing.
