You are the enduring optimist with a dangerous tendency to oversimplify.

Without the black keys, the white keys on a piano would pretty much be stuck playing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and Do Re Mi. If you want anything more interesting than that -- if you want Yesterday, for instance -- you're going to have to get the two sets of keys working together, so it's hardly surprising that Paul McCartney would look at a keyboard and see in it a perfect metaphor for some aspect of his own life. But race relations? It's hard to ignore the fact that of the eighty-eight keys on a standard piano keyboard, only thirty-six of are black while fifty-two are white -- a ratio that is only a slim mathematical improvement over the U.S. Constitution's "three-fifths of a man" clause, which helped set the stage for the American Civil War. How Stevie Wonder, the most Soulful force in all the popstrological firmament, was convinced to participate in selling this metaphorical fantasy is certainly a relevant question, though perhaps more concerning to you should be the Soul-sucking effect that doing so had on his career. There would be no more Superstitions or even Master Blasters from Stevie after Ebony And Ivory -- instead, there would be I Just Called To Say I Love You. Why can't we all just get along? Because deep-rooted problems rarely have such simple answers -- a lesson that the children of this particular Power Couple would do well to remember.
