While others simply pretend, you want a love that will last to the end.

With divorce rates skyrocketing and the sexual revolution in full bloom, it was dark days ahead for the American marriage in the mid-1970s. But then came Captain and Tennille, a walking, talking advertisement for wedded bliss who burst on the scene like a Whitebread supernova in 1975. She with her shiny hair and perfect teeth, and he with a captain's hat that spoke of limitless nautical possibilities -- if you were a white, married, suburban adult in the mid-seventies, they were exactly the couple you wished you could be part of. And notwithstanding the title of their irresistible debut #1, Love Will Keep Us Together, you somehow knew that love alone was not what kept that smile on Toni Tennille's face. No, theirs was a physical as well as a spiritual union of the souls, a fact well attested to in their second #1, Do That To Me One More Time, and in the fact that theirs is one of only three marriages represented in the constellation Holy Matrimony to survive intact to this very day. The rewards of settled monogamy are a driving force in the lives of most Captain and Tennilles -- sometimes as a horror to run from, sadly, but more often than not as an ideal to strive for.
