One might reasonably wonder what it says about Eisenhower-era America that it made a finger-snapping ode to a cold-blooded German murderer one of the biggest hit records in history, but popstrology's concern is what it says about the innocent babies born in the Year of Bobby Darin. Rest easy, though, children of 1959, for the Dominant Star in the year of your birth was more than just a glamorizer of violence. He was also a member of the constellation Shape-Shifter -- a complicated man who was as unwilling to be defined by Mack The Knife as he was by earlier hits like 1958's Splish Splash. It is directly from Bobby Darin that the children of 1959 derive their tendency to abhor and defy simplistic categorization schemes. It's an attribute that sets the children of the Bobby Darin generation apart from many others, though perhaps the same could be said of their sometimes slippery unwillingness to commit firmly to a single one of the many faces they show to the world.
